Situated in the heart of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, this apartment underwent a profound metamorphosis, shedding its outdated typology for a more vibrant and functional living space.
Context
Perched on an elevated corner adjacent to heritage buildings, the apartment enjoys panoramic views of the city and its picturesque surroundings. Originally characterized by compartmentalization and dim corridors, the apartment cried out for a modern revitalization.
Design Strategy
Responding to the property’s programmatic needs while maximizing space, the architects devised a simple yet effective strategy. By compacting service areas and bedrooms, they liberated room for expansive common areas. The kitchen was ingeniously integrated into the new living-dining room, creating a seamless, luminous corner space that embraces the surrounding landscape.
Structural Discovery
During the analysis phase, concealed concrete hanging beams were unearthed, hidden beneath cladding and cabinets. Rather than concealing them, the architects chose to celebrate their presence, allowing them to dictate the spatial organization. Birch wood cladding demarcates private and communal spaces, lending unity and warmth to the interior.
Material Selection
Drawing inspiration from the neighborhood’s vernacular, a 20×20 cm hydraulic pavement, set at a 45-degree angle, pays homage to traditional housing floors. Carrara marble bands echo the structural motif of the hanging beams, elegantly delineating functional zones. Blue velvet curtains add a touch of drama, offering privacy and ambiance control.
